Top trends in employee wellness: Work-life balance and tech solutions
Employee wellness is increasingly an important topic when it comes to organizational performance and talent retention. A report from YCP Auctus and NTT Data explores the most recent trends in employee wellness and highlights the tough choices HR leaders face.
Many organizations now face challenges that have begun to arise as older and younger generations mingle in workplaces. Generation Z and millennial employees very often have a different set of values and expectations to their older peers.
This is increasingly a concern for HR departments, as younger employees expect workplaces to not only support their career growth but also prioritize mental, physical, financial, and social wellbeing. Organizations that do not do enough to address those demands risk disengagement and high turnover among the younger workforce.
Work-life balance and social wellness
Survey results from the YCP Auctus (part of YCP) and NTT DATA report show that HR professionals ranked work-life balance and social wellness as the highest priority factors to address. It may be surprising that these two were the top priorities above even mental and physical health, but the reality is that many employees now see social and work-life balance issues as major factors in their work lives.

Organizations reported being least focused on financial wellness, which suggests that they may treat it as a secondary priority. While some may recognize the importance of integrating financial wellness, others do not consider it essential to overall employee wellbeing.
Tech wellness initiatives
Technology is widely seen by HR leaders as a key enabler for organizations that want to scale and personalize their wellness initiatives. The most important tech solution, cited by 66% of respondents, are real-time health apps – those that help people track their steps, diets, and heart rates.

Many HR professionals also look to virtual therapy (33%) and mental health chatbots (28%), but apps remain the option that most respondents said they prioritize. That is likely because of the higher accessibility and lower cost associated with apps.
Integrating innovative technologies can help provide a personal touch to employee wellness, but doing so also requires more technical implementation that many organizations may not be ready to tackle.
Expectations and benefits of wellness initiatives
When asked what they anticipated could be the potential benefits of enhancing employee wellness initiatives, more HR professionals (83%) pointed to increased productivity.
The take-away is that prioritizing employee wellness leads to a healthier and more productive workforce. Indeed, most organizations view wellness as a tool to make the business run smoother rather than merely as a benefit for employees.

Many HR leaders also cited higher job satisfaction and reduced turnover, with satisfaction (72%) leading as the second most expected benefit and retention (61%) ranking third. These trends show that organizations increasingly see wellness as a competitive advantage that boosts talent retention. HR experts largely believe that a better workplace culture can help boosts employee commitment.
Mental health takes center stage
Employee wellness now goes beyond just simple work-life balance. Today’s workplace demands a more holistic approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.
Many organizations have already made the jump to offering mental health benefits with comprehensive coverage, digital therapy access, and mental health training. Innovative digital tools like teletherapy, wearables, and AI chatbots offer proactive and accessible mental health support. In order to boost adoption, companies will have a bit of work to do educating employees on the offerings.
Organizations are looking forward to a new era of wellbeing in which offerings that were once exceptional are now the norm. Tech solutions like AI and apps could play a major role as organizations will look to create holistic, personalized, and advanced wellness initiatives that move away from traditional models.
