Pakistan hires Kearney to help beef up foreign direct investment inflows

The government of Pakistan has hired renowned management consulting firm Kearney to help its policy makers with beefing up foreign direct investments flowing into the country.

In recent years, the Pakistan’s government has pursued an agenda to bring in more foreign direct investment (FDI) into the country, with numerous privatisations, the guarantee of equal treatment between foreign and local investors and a whole series of tax incentives. The government has also made some necessary efforts in terms of economic reform.

Yet the latest data from the World Investment Report, an annual report which provides a benchmark on FDI attractiveness, found that Pakistan’s attractiveness remains roughly on par with the likes of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

With a huge addressable market (population of 216 million) on offer, much potential is left untapped. In response, the government has launched a program to accelerate the improvement of its FDI attractiveness.

Supporting that program is Kearney, a leading global management consulting firm with over 5,700 people working in 40+ countries.

The firm has already kicked off its work, stating that it will develop a plan of action for sustainable development in consultation with the government. The consultants have so far consulted with 15 institutions of the federal government while 97 priority projects have been identified during this consultation process.

Once the strategy has been set, Kearney will also provide assistance on topics including the privatisation of state-owned-enterprises, improving the regulatory framework of public sector enterprises, and the setup of initiatives that enhance the infrastructure for investments.
