BCG alumnus Joon Aun Ooi new Asia Pacific head of Wyndham
Hotels giant Wyndham has promoted former Boston Consulting Group consultant Joon Aun Ooi to the role of President and Managing Director for Asia Pacific.
Ooi previously was responsible for Wyndham’s South East Asia & Pacific Rim region, and now sees his expanded remit also include Greater China and other Asian markets.
With a portfolio of more than 9,000 hotels, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts is one of the globe’s largest players in the segment. The group has around 20 different brands operating in more than 75 countries, including Dolce Hotels and Resorts and Wyndham in the higher segment, Ramada and La Quinta Inns & Suites in the mid-priced segment, and Days Inn in the budget segment.
Ooi joined Wyndham in 2013 as Vice President, Openings and Operations for Wyndham in Greater China. During this time, he successfully introduced four new brands to the market and played a pivotal role in growing the combined franchise and management portfolio to over 1,400 hotels.
Prior to his current employer, Ooi held leadership roles across Asia and Greater China including vice president strategy at InterContinental Hotels Group. He moved to China in 2005 to spearhead the company’s entry and growth in China.
Before joining the hotels industry in 2002, Ooi spent more than seven years at Boston Consulting Group where he latterly was a Principal.
In his new role at Wyndham, Ooi will lead the firm’s brands across the Asia Pacific region, as the tourism industry recovers from the fallout of travel and demand due to the Covid-19-induced downturn.
“These are extremely challenging times for the hotel industry and it is more crucial now than ever for Wyndham Hotels & Resorts to be agile in adapting to the evolving situation to be able to drive greater value for our owners and partners,” Ooi said in a press statement.
